How the digestive endoscopy exam is performed

The digestive endoscopy examination is performed with the aid of endoscopes, flexible tubes of various calibre and length, depending on the examined organ, with a micro-camera on one end. It permits to view on a monitor the examined organ parts: upper digestive tract (oesophagus, stomach and duodenum) and lower digestive tract (colon and rectum).

Videoechoendoscopy, a recent technique, allows to study the same organs through small ultrasound probes at the end of the endoscope, with the possibility to assess deep lesions or organs external to the viscera examined, such as pancreas, liver, etc. It also allows the removal of tissue through the viscera walls with a specific needle.
