Day Hospital and Day Surgery

Some conditions not requiring inpatient admission are treated (circumcision, frenuloplasty, varicocelectomy, urethral caruncle resection, etc.). Day surgery access is programmed if the necessity emerges after an ambulatory specialist examination.

Details on surgical techniques

We have good experience not only in traditional techniques, but also in endoscopic, laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery. This qualifies the Urology unit as a national reference centre.

To complete our wide range of modern equipment, a Da Vinci surgical robot was acquired.

Urological Laparoscopy and Robotic Surgery with Da Vinci system

Laparoscopic technique is a minimally invasive technique performed by inserting in the abdominal-retroperitoneal cavity a laparoscope (optic camera system), through a small 1cm incision. After distending the cavity with CO2, more trocars (“point of entry for surgical instruments”) are prepared for the insertion by the surgeon of the needed surgical instruments.

Being traditional and robotic laparoscopy minimally invasive, hospitalization and recovery time can be greatly reduced. Da Vinci robot is the most modern system for minimally invasive surgery, very successful in urological field. Through robotics the surgeon can remain away from the surgical area, which is three-dimensionally projected with ultra-high resolution images. Through monitors and controls, robotic arms can introduce and operate endoscopic instruments through small incisions. Traditional and robotic laparoscopy bring significant advantages, such as:

  • Minimally invasive incisions with reduced tissue trauma;
  • Image magnification (up to 20-30 times) with increased surgical precision
  • Minor bleeds requiring less transfusions;
  • Reduced hospitalization time and post-surgical pain;
  • Reduced recovery time;
  • Safer for the patient.

  • Flexible diagnostic cystoscopy
  • Ascending pyelography, diagnostic cystography
  • Ultrasound guided nephrostomy placement
  • Endoscopic placement of ureteral stent
  • Pelvic floor physio-kinesitherapy (biofeedback)
  • Intracavernous administration of medicines for impotence treatment
  • Botulinum toxin injection for detrusor overactivity (urge incontinence)

Doctor-patient relations

Particular attention is dedicated to customization of services and cures.
Medics of this unit work together with other specialists to treat conditions in a multidisciplinary team and choose the most appropriate therapy.
In order to improve communication between patient and doctor, a project was created in 2014: the nurse represents the point of reference for the patient during all the stay.
At the beginning of the stay, the patient is “assigned” to a “tutor nurse” who will be his spokesman for his necessities, interpreting and taking care of his needs.
