Pancreas, its pathologies and therapeutic treatments

Disorders treated and cured

For the number of cases treated and high level of specialization, we are a top level centre in the nation for the cure of pancreatic disorders, which can be divided in two categories: inflammatory diseases (chronic and acute pancreatitis) and neoplastic diseases (pancreatic gland tumor). Pancreatic neoplasms can appear in late-stage (non-resectable tumor) or in the early stages (resectable tumor). Our objective is to treat these conditions through the most modern therapy modalities, including open abdomen surgery, minimally invasive and robotic surgery, radiofrequency ablation with endoscopic ultrasound and interventional radiology.

Surgeries performed by the team can be:

  • Open abdomen pancreatic resection, with minimally invasive and robotic technique (Da Vinci): Pancreaticoduodenectomy, pancreatico-splenectomy, total or intermediate pancreatectomy, enucleation, open radiofrequency ablation, with endoscopic ultrasound or percutaneous.
  • Biliary and digestive bypass, chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic pseudocysts treatment
  • Major liver surgery (hepatectomy) or minor (liver resection)

Non-resectable neoplasms (advanced tumor): We have an innovative and modern approach for patients with non-resectable tumors. A comprehensive picture is given, including diagnosis with biopsy, an assessment by a multi-specialty team (pain therapy, nutritionist, psycho-oncologist) and a final summary compiled by the medics of the team, in contact with other Oncologists from other structures where the patient can be assigned. Every patient will be assigned a tutor, represented by a referring doctor and a dedicated nurse, who will follow them during the therapy. A reassessment will then be made by our team: patients initially not eligible for surgery may become so, after specific therapies with really encouraging results. This is a real innovation. Even patients with cancer at a metastatic stage have the possibility to be successfully operated after therapies.

Diagnosis and interventional procedures

A detail about the techniques

To properly cure our patients we perform a complete diagnostics: radiological (ultrasound with contrast medium, multislices abdomen CT, MRI, percutaneous hepatic cholangiography, needle aspiration of abdominal masses), digestive endoscopy (EGDS gastroscopy), retrograde endoscopic cholangiography, endoscopic ultrasound with possible fine-needle aspiration.
Along with traditional surgery, we use interventional procedures like:

  • Endoscopic treatment of pancreatic and gallstones
  • Radiological or endoscopic placement of biliary prosthesis
  • Endoscopic placement of pancreatic prosthesis
  • Percutaneous or endoscopic drainageof pancreatic pseudocysts
  • Percutaneous or angiographic treatment of hepatic neoplasms (chemoembolization, thermal ablation with radiofrequency and ethanol sclerotherapy)

Our specialties

For more than seventy years, We have been taking care of our patients from Veneto and

other regions, following them before, during and after their stay.

Hepato-Bilio-Pancreatic Surgery

Oncological Psychology

Outpatient Activity

We also conduct specialized office visits, under the agreement with NHS or private. Treating with complex conditions, we proceed with a multidisciplinary discussion and diagnostic investigation in a short time (Ultrasound, CT and MR imaging).

Doctor-patient relations

Particular attention is dedicated to customization of services and cures. Medics of this unit work together with other specialists, particularly radiologists, Gastroenterologist, oncologist and antalgist to treat conditions in a multidisciplinary team and choose the most appropriate therapy.

In order to improve communication between patient and doctor, a project was created in 2014: the nurse represents the point of reference for the patient during all the stay.
At the beginning of the stay, the patient is “assigned” to a “tutor nurse” who will be his spokesman for his necessities, interpreting and taking care of his needs.
